Socially Responsible Architecture - 2022
Sathmahala is a seven-story building designed and constructed to extend the educational infrastructure of a leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka. One of the buildings in school premises was not in a good shape to support students' activities and the school authority decided to have a new building to fill this gap and uplift the current status of the school. The building is for the use of young students from grade six to nine and it needed to have all the relevant facilities along with classroom spaces. "Sathmahala" which is an element of contemporary architecture, resembles a timeless sculpture in an enormous scale. The modern interpretation of traditional architectural elements is subtle and precise, hence creates a cohesion with the unique architectural character of surrounding buildings. The language of Sathmahala was structured upon a careful study, especially on the context, and user group. Sathmahala is a user friendly, sustainable building which emphasize the humanitarian aspects and social responsibility of good architecture.
