Private Residencies - Merit Award

Located in suburb of Colombo, the striated house is a home for a family of professionals and their two teenage children. The site faces the marsh and is surrounded by taller buildings along all three sides. The design of the home focused on orienting the users and family to the marsh and maximize marsh views and nature views and to cut away from the noise visual clutter of a busy suburb. The site slopes towards the marsh and the building utilizes the site levels. A journey from the street into the interior is through a narrow textural stairway space, that reminiscent of a calming device in the spiritual spaces, from a busy street into a more private realm. The exteriors of the walls with light falling from above and an unexpected view of trees and a slender stairwell, dramatically lit, culminates at the fish pond at the First floor level. The first floor comprises of the living spaces of the home & guest rooms, while the ground is the dining, kitchen and the services and opens out to the garden. The second floor is the most intimate and comprises of the master bedroom, the children’s bedrooms and family rooms with wide balcony where the living spaces can extend and most of the family can use this space year round. The uppermost level is the lounge pavilion opening to the treetops with beautiful panoramic views of the wetland marsh, bird life.
