Renovations - Merit Award

A two-storeyed dwelling of volumes confined to few rooms, was renovated to transform to an amply spaced night club with a whimsical interior and street presence. Originally a nondescript 80's residence that later functioned as a karaoke bar, the critical design challenge was to convert its architectural and spatial typology within a restricted budget to suit the new recreational function. The renovation included thoughtfully stripping out a few interior walls and raising some exterior walls to open up a double height volume. Spatial progression was managed within the existing footprint with minimum alterations: The front boundary wall of the premises is treated as the front face, a change from the usual practice of commercial building façades. The silver painted boundary wall acts as the striking backdrop to the club’s signage. The interior metallic coloured theme continues to the outside, in the form of a steel canopy structure, which projects down to the front face as painted pipes adding a whimsical element on to the street front. A clubber first arrives at a front court, an informal gathering space, after which a ramp leads one through a small tunnel-like space eventually opening out to the large double-height volume, the club’s showground. Sightlines are maintained connecting the two levels. Although the typology calls for an enclosed space, the spatial climax is of containment with escape and dispersion. The service facilities are on the back of the premises and the bar is the intermediate threshold between the public and backhouse.
