Leisure point at Mirissa

Design Awards - 2021

Mr. Nisal Hettiarachchi

Mirissa

Sports and Recreational - Shortlisted Nominee

The Leisure point at Mirissa was designed to create a unique leisure dining experience in a small plot of land overlooking the popular turquoise beach strip, approximately 150 kilometres south of Colombo. The uninhibited site was a 63 perch land is highly regulated by RD and CCD reservations and therefore the buildable area is limited to 27 perches, out of which, only a 10 perch plot was allocated for this project. The vacant lots on either side neighboring the main restaurant were kept untouched for future development strategically. Designing a 52 pax restaurant, 40 pax informal dining area, a pool and other secondary facilities within such a small, linear space was one major challenge to overcome commendably. The building was raised above the ground by 4 feet allocating adequate space for balancing tanks and services in terms of managing the space in the most efficient manner. The design is a fusion less and light which evidently occupies a lesser building footprint. The main idea was to create a unique piece of architecture which also acts as a “PAUSE” to the monotonous concrete streetscape, giving a completely refreshed ambiance for both local and foreign visitors. While proposing to settle with a steel structure by the beach there were many challenges, somehow all resolved aesthetically.
