Renovations - Honorable Mention

Kegalle pavilion is old residential house converted to a tropical hospitality villa using existing old structures and reutilized abandoned garden spaces for beautiful landscape intervention. The social and cultural impacts throughout the past years have changed the functional efficacy and spatial hierarchy. The project Kegalle pavilion entrusted the reinventing the essence of the old glory of the building and converting it into a luxury boutique villa. Overall building approach; identified as a 'sustainable renovation' that leads to more energy efficiency and gaining more sustainable benefits to the project. The entrance from the main road is emphasized by an aquamarine colour reclaimed, two antique entry doors, and two frangipani trees giving the entry feeling to the villa. The entrance is enhanced by the rustic stone paving with reclaimed pivoted wood panels giving a see-through feeling to the entrance veranda. The living and dining spaces act as the spine of the villa connecting to the greenery outside. The grey interior brings in a calmer and tranquil vibe, while natural timber colours enhance the richness of the space. Bedrooms are designed to create privacy and are well-connected to both sides of the landscape. Front and rear verandas are a dominant feature in this extraverted approach for relaxation while experiencing the tropical landscape. The large front garden gives more beating space to the old building, whereas the open pavilion highlights the climax of the spatial progression. All interior details were carefully created using recycled elements and materials to recreate the tropical retreat.
