Private Residencies - Merit AwardClient desired a native house after 30 years’ stay in abroad, which could heal bitter memory of the destroyed house in civil war. The land transferred by generations, Out of 1608m2, 393m2 decided for dwelling, rest for coconut plantation. The location is dense in a kilometre distance to the heart of Jaffna. The native community displaced to different parts of the world, new community is emerging. Two blocks are in different scale interconnected by the staircase with flying roof expressing a family. The transition courtyard grasps nutritious sun light in the morning while admitting natural light, air movements and transforming the internal spaces. Two blocks consist multifunctional and private. The scale and details of multifunction hall validates social justice with the immediate neighbouring community, whose income depends on daily wages and optimizes private life for all dwellers without discrimination. The multifunctional hall facilitates social interactions space for family, neighbours and domestic service providers via all creatures. This revives the life lived in a simple, slower phase and sharing socio economic and political dialogs. The space engraves happy and sad moments throughout life transformation, the courtyard extends the moments when needed. The private block consists of bedrooms, kitchen, sitting, dining and toilets. Openings are detailed to justify the law of sight for individual limit and unlimit, while admitting light and ventilation. Most spaces are arranged to focus the courtyard magnetise interactions. The functional spaces are arranged to start and end the day with the sunrise and sun set.
