Colombo Street is a restaurant located in Nottingham, England, designed to offer an authentic Sri Lankan dining experience alongside East Asian cuisine. Spanning 2,550 sq. ft., the space includes a Sri Lankan dining area, an Indo-Chinese section, and a bar lounge offering specialized cocktails. The design incorporates elements of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, creating an inviting and vibrant atmosphere that reflects the country’s diverse culinary traditions. Situated in a city known for its youthful energy, diverse culture, and vibrant nightlife, the restaurant targets a demographic of 18–30-year-olds. To appeal to this audience, the interiors feature visually dynamic elements that blend modern and traditional styles, emphasizing the energetic spirit of Nottingham’s young population. The project was completed in two phases. The first phase, completed in 2021, focused on the Sri Lankan dining area and bar. In 2023, the space was transformed, incorporating an Indo-Chinese restaurant to cater to those exploring Indian and East Asian flavors. Bold pop art murals and a color palette inspired by the Sri Lankan national flag enhanced the cultural vibrancy of the space. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the project was executed remotely through live-streaming coordination and technical support. Key elements like light fixtures and artwork were sourced from Sri Lanka, ensuring authenticity and maintaining the quality of craftsmanship. The result is a unique dining space that blends cultural storytelling with modern design, offering a memorable experience for Nottingham’s energetic and diverse audience.
